Travel the World Wednesday: Newport, RI

Happy Wednesday, and hump day, to everyone! Today we will be traveling to the coastal town of Newport, Rhode Island.  This location was suggested by one of my lovely blog and etsy ladies, Liz from missmerryweatherscreations.  Since I had just visited this place for the first time a year ago, I thought it was perfect! Also a fantastic little spot for your next summer getaway

Pack your bags, we're off to Newport!

The Mansions

Honestly it is kind of difficult to not notice the ginormous mansions throughout this town. There are walking tours of just about every one, and if you want to make a day of pretending you're super rich, a ticket for 5 mansions will run you $31.  When my family visited, we only toured The Breakers, the famous Vanderbilt summer home. It is insane on the inside (I'm talking 24k gold wallpaper), and the "backyard" sits right on the cliff of the ocean.
The Breakers. It was hard to get a picture with the whole house in one shot

The Newport Cliff Walk
Sadly, our day trip to Newport was foggy like nobody's business (see picture above) so we had to skip the famous Cliff Walk. This is a free walk along the edge of the ocean where you get gorgeous views of Newport.  Walk as little or as far as you want (total walk takes about 3 hours) and they have trolley services to take you back to the beginning!

Shop Your Heart Out
The main road along the coast of Newport is America's Cup Avenue. You drive right through the hustle and bustle and there is shopping and dining like no tomorrow. The great part about this shopping experience is feeling the lovely ocean breeze, and browsing designer one-of-a-kind boutiques.  Be sure to make reservations to eat at the famous White Horse Tavern or the Back Alley Pub for brunch!  The shop I make sure to never miss is on the edge of town called Goodies by the Sea. They have every candy, fudge, yummy treat imaginable!

Events
Newport's main event season is all summer long.  There is a chowder cook-off, countless music festivals, art shows, garden tours, major tennis events around the Tennis Hall of Fame, and of course endless boat and sailing events, or even take a sailing lesson!

I hope you had fun in Newport!  If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you want to go??  Maybe we can go there for the next Travel the World Wednesday :)

  2. Glad you had such a lovely time! Newport is such a fun & classy place to explore. I'm hoping we can get away for a weekend to Martha's Vineyard (where we got married) - it's a relaxing and beautiful place to spend some a few days :)
